Transports in Galway

Galway city centre is not big and can be explored on foot. But if you need to move around quicker, you can use the local bus service, which is operated by Bus Éireann, or you can always get a taxi.

Flying to Galway

Though it is a minor airport, Galway airport is only 8km away from the City centre. There is one bus service Monday to Friday that brings you to the central bus Station (€3.30 Single / €5.50 Return) but the taxi might be a better option.

The official Taxi partners for Galway Airport, Big-O-Taxi-Co (091-58 58 58), provide full cover for all incoming flights irrespective of flight arrival time. A taxi printed receipt  (not handwritten) must be given to all customers. This should include details of the vehicle licence number, the distance of the journey undertaken, the amount paid, the date and duration of the journey.

The closest international airport is Shannon in neighbouring Co. Clare. From there you can get a bus to Galway for €13.50 single/19.80 return.

Getting around

Bus is probably the cheapest and easiest way to travel around if you don't have a car. You can plan your trip and buy your tickets online at Bus Éireann. The railway is another option, especially to connect with Dublin. Check the Iarnród Éireann website for details and buying tickets.

Travel to the Arran Islands

Technically you can fly with Aer Árann from Inverin (Connemara Airport) to any of the three Islands. All flights take approximately 10 mins and cost €45 return. You can get bus connections to and from Galway.

But is it probably better for the environment to take the ferry. Year round ferry services are in place, though they are passenger only, with no car ferry available. The down side is that none operate from Galway Harbour, but you will of course encounter the same problem if you chose to fly.

While you cannot bring your own car onto the islands, a road network exists on each of them so you can bring your bike and you will even be able to get a taxi, should you need such a service.
